Hokitika to Franz Josef

Day 22, Thursday, February 2, 2006. About 25 km inland from Hokitika is the Hokitika Gorge. This is its true unbelievable colour. After a few stops and short walks, we made a two hour round trip trek into the impressive Franz Josef Glacier. The more adventuresome actually take guided treks out onto the ice. I was very impressed until I focused in with my telephoto lens: they have stairs carved into the ice for them. What a bunch of tarts, I bet they don’t tell their friends this.

Not true, we had boot clampets with jaws on them. No steps when we were there. Lots more to see and enjoy to come. Sounds like you are having ideal weather. Still spring like here but some winter is near. J&J

You were a lot tougher in those days. Now they can process several hundred an hour. I should have gone.
